About

Picture
Sakina Literary Society of the Arts was inspired by the first literary salon—which was established by Sukaynah Bint Al-Husayn (may God be pleased with her)—and by the later salons of the Ottoman Empire. Our Society provides a space to celebrate and encourage Muslim women creatives in the development of their art, and to offer avenues of social discussion, cultural transmission, intellectual exchange, literary criticism, and creative events.

“The most complete of believers in faith are those with the best character, and the best of you are the best in behavior to their women.”

﷽
As Black women, we have a great capacity to survive and, one would argue, thrive. Despite all that befell us over the past 500 years, we participated in communities and societies and made great contributions to bettering those communities and societies. We’ve held our families together, providing education and inventions while, at the same time, holding onto and passing down the cultural and spiritual heritages of the Black communities and societies we belong to. How well we thrive is a litmus test of how equitable, advanced and civilized the communities and societies we find ourselves in are.

In Memory of Imam Jamil: Supporting His Ongoing Pursuit of Justice

Picture
Pictured is Imam Jamil Al-Amin (left) with his family. He is holding his younger son, Kairi (bottom left), and next to his niece, Kesso Milner (middle), his oldest son, Ali (middle right), and his wife for 53 years, Karima Al-Amin (right).
While Imam Jamil has passed away, it is up to us to clear his name. Imam Jamil's case is still under review by the Fulton County District Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Unit. Imam Jamil was on the verge of freedom after merely waiting for the judge and district attorney to grant him a new trial based on a legal motion that brought forth newly discovered evidence and constitutional violations before the court.

While his path to exoneration did not happen in his lifetime, we need your support to aid the legal team to still achieve justice for Imam Jamil. Imam Jamil is currently represented by the Innocence Project, in addition to multiple law firms and individual lawyers.

Imam Jamil's son, Kairi Al-Amin, has been leading the fight for his father's freedom. Over the past few years, he has been working with a production company to film a Documentary Series (Docuseries) to showcase Imam Jamil's innocence.
While the Docuseries is still under production simultaneous to Imam Jamil's path to exoneration, we need your help to finish the Docuseries and complete Imam Jamil's story.
